It’s important to make any interactivity obvious to your audience—even by creating subtitles to instruct them to click or hover for more information. Users can also interact with your visualizations by selecting marks and hovering to see tooltips. The actions you set up can respond with navigation and changes in the view.

After you've created one or more sheets, you can combine them in a dashboard, add interactivity, and much more. This dashboard needs visual cues to help guide our audience from one section to the next. We could choose to highlight one bar that we’d like to draw our audience’s attention to, but for our purposes, we will simply use a neutral color for these bars. We’ll use our two dominant colors to improve our line charts by highlighting the month with the highest value and the month with the lowest value. We’ll also change the blue line to black for better contrast with our highlight colors. While they do provide a visual cue of where one chart ends and another begins, we can employ other strategies to accomplish this which we’ll talk about in part 5.

In worksheet five, let’s work on predicting the upcoming COVID-19 cases in the INDIAN states. Additionally, you can use a Bar Chart to represent the Recovery Rate in India. The next step will be to use the data from the “Indian States” group to generate a Map Chart that describes confirmed case count and state name details.

Also, because we have the map in view, we probably don't need the South region column in Sales in the South, either. Too many views can also interfere with the performance of your dashboard after it's published. A well-designed dashboard can align your organization's efforts, help uncover key insights, and speed up decision-making. Use this topic for tips on best practices for creating effective dashboards in Tableau. This visualization tool gives visibility to the availability of products in the form of excesses or out of stock measures. In doing so, it helps you save a ton of money, since excessive products will eventually lead to spilled costs, while lack of availability indicates lost sales potential.

Design Tips for Better Business Dashboards in Tableau

Lovelytics is a team of expert consultants who help the world’s leading companies use data and AI to better their business. From the data lakehouse to the CEO dashboard—love your data with Lovelytics. Increasing the amount of space between elements placed more emphasis on the elements within the dashboard, but I think it could use a little bit more design to make it even better. When I fixed the alignment of these KPI’, I also took the opportunity to use a tip I learned from Andy Kriebel to place the chart title & KPI in the same worksheet as the line chart!

Use color effectively in the Tableau dashboard

Like worksheets, you access dashboards from tabs at the bottomof a workbook. Data in sheets and dashboards is connected; when you modify a sheet, any dashboards containing it change, and vice versa. Both sheets and dashboards update with the latest available data from the datasource. It's not easy to see details for each item under Sub-Category from your Sales in the South bar chart.

Whether you’re a sales manager, sales analysts or sales executive, this tableau dashboard gives you the full picture—leads, opportunities, deal stages, and more. Performance and efficiency should be treated as part of the design process—not as an afterthought. Responsiveness is an important success factor for end users when viewing reports and dashboards, so making your workbooks run as quickly as possible makes for happier users.

Marketing Automation with Data Science & A.I

This is a powerful and simple way to make dashboards easier to navigate. In the example below, the question pulls the audience in and then tells the audience how to answer the question using the dashboard. In the second worksheet, let’s create another visualization that provides insights on the COVID-19 recovery in Indian states. With the Image object, you can either insert image files into dashboards or link to images posted on the web.

Tableau Dashboard helps you in highlighting your company’s KPIs, depending on the business questions being asked, and the end-user. Dashboard actions, filters, and parameters, are the best tactics because they provide a way to transfer control of the data analysis from you to your client. Tableau provides one of the most effective ways to analyze data from any business process including sales, returns, purchase orders, warehouse operation, customer behavior, and more.

With a vast array of dashboard types, you can track everything from real-time sales metrics to annual performance reviews. Titles are an easy way to make your dashboard more digestible for your audience. You add more context with subtitles that describe how to interact with the worksheet or dashboard.

You can find a list of books by renowned data visualization experts in the appendix. Adding these whitepapers and books to the resources of your analytics community can lead to a deeper understanding and internalization of visual best practices. Next, let’s create a line chart that will describe the COVID-19 trend in the Indian states.

Our restaurant concepts have proven stiff competition in a tough industry because they all work to fill a niche. We currently operate 23 restaurants with 6 different concepts in California, Arizona, Colorado,  Nevada, and Washington and we're growing! Our restaurant concepts include the Water Grill (7), Pier Burger, 555 East, Lou & Mickey's, Meat On Ocean, and the King's Fish House (12) establishments. In 1983, Jeff and Sam King signed their first lease together, and on the day before Thanksgiving, 6 weeks before the '84 Olympics, we opened our first concept, 555 East Steakhouse, and we still own and operate the restaurant today. King's Seafood is family owned and operated, and has been growing and evolving for over 70 years!

We're all about Family

Six weeks before the 1984 Olympics, we opened our first concept, 555 East, and we still own and operate the restaurant today. At that time, our company was called University Restaurant Group, a name inspired by the ‘friendly’ rivalry of USC and UCLA, Sam and Jeff's respective alma maters, and we held that name until 1998. Since then they've proven to be successful operators, and they've cultivated the art of delivering a quality product and a great Guest experience in all economic environments. They learned a lot from their fathers and Sam and Jeff continue to teach, guide and lead us to great adventures. Their dedication and commitment to the industry, the product, and the people has resulted in a profitable, successful, and growing company.

What do we think about Seafood?

Pull up a chair and get those crab crackers ready to enjoy these delicious crustaceans. The Western Australian Rock Lobster (Panulirus cygnus) is found primarily on the West Coast of Australia. Not normally available in the United States as a live product, you’ll find them swimming in our saltwater tanks today, for a limited time. The world's largest species of flatfish is here, all the way from the central Gulf of Alaska! We offer several preparations during the season, including pan-seared, grilled and Macadamia nut-crusted Halibut. Make your Mother’s Day reservations for Sunday, May 12 and give mom the day she deserves - with the people and seafood she loves the most.

As part of this transition, Sam went to work for Tiny Naylor’s and Jeff went to sit on the 1984 Olympic Committee which was to be hosted in Los Angeles. The Carriage Club, a restaurant in Long Beach, was on the market and Sam went with Tiny Naylor’s to look at the prospect of the space. He called Jeff and proposed they start their own venture and take over this location as their first project. Jeff agreed and they signed their first lease the day before Thanksgiving in 1983.

King's Seafood Company has evolved through over 70 years of family restaurant business experience. In 1945, Lou and Mickey King, Jeff and Sam King's respective fathers, began to build the King's Restaurant chain throughout Southern California. After a hugely successful run of almost 40 years, the family sold the chain of six restaurants to Tiny Naylor's, Inc. in 1982.

Right out of the box, it fit my Glock G17 with ZEV threaded barrel snugly, with the open bottom allowing the extended barrel to poke through without issue. There’s an MRD variant of the Reflex available for slightly more than the non-optics version we have here today, and it’s a departure from FN’s normal optics-mounting system. Rather than use the plates and shims that the standard 509 MRD employs, the Reflex has a standard RMSc footprint for direct attachment. Again, it’s a personal preference, and FN has opted to have both models available at launch. I tried all three, and they all worked well, but my favorite was the standard engraved (with their logo) polymer clip. This two-screw belt holder is wide enough to form a firm grip on the belt, preventing the holster from swiveling inside the waistband. It also allows the easiest on and off at the beginning and end of your day.

There is no “perfect” holster, but some are a lot better than others. When ANR sent me the Right-Handed Quick Ship Standard Outside the Waistband (OWB) Holster, I gave it a whirl and ended up quite impressed. Having used it for a few weeks now, I can confidently attest to its exceptional durability, simple design, and ease of use. “In 2013, I started getting interested in firearms classes and needed holsters and equipment for class,” Costa said. “At the time, there were only a few reputable Kydex holster makers, and prices were very high compared to today’s prices.

reviews for Master Blaster (Mag & Pistol Combo)

Committing to a handgun of larger proportions means you’re more amenable to full-size gear, and a more sizeable handheld flashlight is a great piece of kit to have with you. We’ve added the PowerTac M5 G3 flashlight to this kit for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the whopping 2,000+ lumens on its highest setting. It’s also impact- and water-resistant, has a lanyard included and a rechargeable battery. Whether you’re a fan of the .45 ACP, big-bore pistols in general or are just hedging against future ammunition shortages, having a pistol in something other than 9 mm isn’t a bad idea at all. FN’s new FN 545 Tactical is a great choice for anyone looking for a big-bore, striker-fired polymer pistol, and offers great capacity and utility. In any case, it represents another choice for the concealed-carry practitioner as well as a smart move on FN’s part to expand the company’s striker-fired offerings.

The Appendix with Claw holster is available both from ANR Design in the company’s usual pantheon of options or directly from the FN web store. Should you opt for the version available through FN, it does come with FN branding. In any case, the ANR Design Appendix with Claw holster is a rock-solid choice for concealed carry. With or without optics, black or FDE, it comes with many choices, and presents yet another choice for the concealed carrier.

As the 9 mm situation improved, the polymer-frame, striker-fired pistols exemplified by the Glock G17 and G19, Smith & Wesson M&P, SIG P320 and others dominated the concealed-carry scene. The poor Hi Power was neglected, overlooked and all-but forgotten, to the point that Browning discontinued it. Two new models designed for the fast-paced world of 3-gun. PICK YOUR PERFECT ITINERARY

The fitness center and most public spaces on the ship are also accessible without any additional fees, though gratuities and certain other amenities are extra. Tours of the spa are available at any time during your cruise and have no additional cost or obligation. In fact, these tours are a great way to learn about what the spa offers. Some Royal Caribbean ships have a sauna, hot tub and/or steam room available for no additional cost. This activity is complimentary on port days and comes with an extra cost when the ship is at sea.

Specialty Dining

Royal Caribbean does not provide traditional babysitting services on its ships. However, they offer a nursery for children aged six months to 36 months, where trained professionals ensure their care and safety. The nursery service comes with its own set of fees, which differ based on the time of day. Royal Caribbean has implemented a structured system for gratuities, ensuring that guests don’t need to distribute cash tips individually to staff. The amount set for tipping is determined by the stateroom category.

However, guests in a Royal Suite or other select suites (excluding Junior Suites) enjoy complimentary room service. While the standard dining options are undoubtedly commendable, these specialty locations offer guests the chance to enjoy a unique culinary journey. Beyond the included meals, Royal Caribbean boasts a diverse roster of specialty restaurants, each with its unique pricing structure, either via a cover charge or à la carte. Specialty restaurants do require additional spending, but the prices are generally not exorbitant compared to similar dining experiences on land. Also, Royal Caribbean often offers discounts on these packages, so a well-timed purchase could tip the scales in favor of the package being a good deal. However, if you also consume non-alcoholic beverages, you could easily reach that break-even point with a lower number of alcoholic drinks.

This story is part of Travel Tips

WiFi on Royal Caribbean is affordable, but it is offered at an additional price. Some cruisers, like concierge guests, do receive it for free, however. Please note that drink packages come at an additional cost and the actual cost varies from ship to ship. While Royal Caribbean offers a wide range of exciting shore excursions, these are not included in the cruise price. Port fees and taxes are typically included in the price of your Royal Caribbean cruise. These fees cover the cost of using the port facilities and services, such as docking, security, and waste disposal.

And the best part is that all of these top-notch amenities are included in the price of the Royal Caribbean cruise fare. Some attractions are limited to one time per person and require advanced reservations. Most ships offer interior cabins to suites, and everything in between. Choosing your cabin type will be the main driver of your total cruise costs. So, be sure to review all the options available on your particular ship.

As a result, Royal Caribbean created cruise add-ons like specialty dining packages, drink packages, fitness classes, and more. Be sure to check out Swim & Tonic, the largest swim-up bar at sea. Admission is free if you want to hang out and wade in the water, though alcoholic beverages will cost you extra unless you purchase a Specialty Beverage Package. The package is a great deal, and it includes beers, wines, and other vacation libations at bars such as the Lemon Post.

While not all are required, there are some that you have to pay, such as port fees and gratuities. These two things alone can tack on an extra $400 per person depending on where you're cruising to and how long the sailing is. Earn your wilderness badge as you cruise between the Alaska glaciers, pan for gold in prospecting towns, and trek across the rugged tundra on an Alaska vacation. And savor a burst of flavors throughout culture-rich ports in the Mediterranean, the British Isles, Scandinavia and beyond on an unforgettable cruise through Europe. No matter where in the world you choose to wander, cruises can take you deep into top-rated cruise ports and off-the-beaten-path gems, so you can experience each one like a local.

Guests with disabilities can also book an accessible stateroom in many categories. Most meals onboard are included in the cost of your Royal Caribbean cruise. This includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks throughout the day.

Africa Cruises Exotic African Cruises

Cruise to Durban and explore the colonial history South Africa and delight in the famous beaches where the locals spend their vacations. Discover imaginative architecture, impressive Spanish dishes and beautiful excursions into nature when you cruise to Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. Traditional cultures blend beautifully with modern advancements in Abu Dhabi, the stunning capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Wildlife Safaris

Botswana is also a top safari destination, and it borders South Africa as well as Namibia. Cruisers thus have access to world-class safari parks from Cape Town or Maputo. The continent’s celebrity roster of land mammals draws tourists from across the globe to gawk at giraffes, elephants and more on safari, but land-based vacations in Africa cover only so much ground.

Port Louis, Mauritius

The voyages will include maiden calls at Portimao, Portugal; Lysekil, Sweden; and Bodo and Haugesund, Norway. Of course, this is only a small sample of the majestic beauty waiting for you on an Azamara Africa cruise vacation from The Cruise Web. Mezze are small plates popular throughout the southern Mediterranean and the Middle East, and you can find them at cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the region. Try traditional hummus made with spicy local olive oil and fresh chickpeas.

Best Time for African Safari Cruises

The Sahara, meanwhile, the largest hot desert in the world, is spread across the whole of northern Africa, encompassing about a dozen countries and is a geographic and cultural differentiator. Although nomadic herders have largely given way to lucrative oil and gas economies, humans have inhabited the Great Desert for thousands of years. Kruger National Park, one of the most popular safari destinations, is at the opposite end of South Africa from its major port in Cape Town, about 1,100 miles away, but only a four-hour drive from Mozambique’s Maputo.

Voyage dates

Cruisers arrive at the Gateway to Mecca for an overnight, with options to travel to the holy city of Medina or take a boat trip to snorkel the Bayada Reef, known as the Maldives of Jeddah. From the dock in Safaga, Egypt, guests can embark on an all-day tour of Luxor or the famed Valley of the Kings. Expedition sailings in Africa take place on Silver Cloud, which is designed as an Expedition vessel and comes with equipment for snorkeling, kayaking and getting up close to your surroundings. Jump in and snorkel the waters of Djibouti with your ship’s expedition leader, or hop in a Zodiac for a cruise around Aldabra, an island in the Seychelles that’s home to a rare giant tortoise. The Western Sahara, known for its sparse population and its sandy desert about the size of China, inhabits 690 miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. At Gabon, the North Atlantic becomes the South Atlantic Ocean, just south of the Gulf of Guinea.

With a large Indian influence in South Africa, particularly in Durban, which has the highest population of Indians outside of the country, their spicy cuisine is prevalent. In Durban, ‘Bunny Chow’, a mutton or bean curry served in a hollowed-out bread loaf, is a local city favourite. Prepare for big swings in temperature, especially when exploring the desert. Day times can be scotching hot, but then at night, temperatures fall dramatically and it can become very cold. Due to its vast landmass stretching across the equator, climates across Africa can vary; from the subtropical desert temperatures of Namibia to the temperate, regions of South Africa.

After reaching Cape Town, Explorer will operate a second, 15-night Africa sailing that features stops in South Africa, Namibia and Mozambique. Kicking off Nov. 28, 2018, the Africa sailing also will include stops in Sao Tome and Principe as well as Namibia. The Cape Verde Islands off the African coast also are on the itinerary as is Madeira Island and two stops in the Canary Islands. The six-month-old Regent vessel will visit Senegal, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Togo as it works it way south on a 24-night journey from Lisbon, Portugal to Cape Town, South Africa, the luxury line announced Wednesday. What's been billed as the world's most luxurious cruise ship, the 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer, in 2018 will operate a voyage down the west coast of Africa -- a rarity in the cruise world.

Hluhluwe Game Reserve is one of the oldest proclaimed reserves in Africa, and only an hour away from Richards Bay. Pay airfare for one guest, and you'll automatically lock-in roundtrip flights for two. Secure these savings online by choosing your nearest airport in step one of your cruise booking, and enjoy air-to-sea made easy.

Vineyards in Western Cape Town, South Africa

Off East Africa in the Indian Ocean is the 115-island archipelago of the Seychelles, as well as Madagascar, the world’s fifth-largest island. Mauritius blends island life with African, European and Indian influences; Réunion maintains status as an overseas French territory. Each port brings a different flavor to the serene, aquamarine surroundings. Four days in Egypt qualify this 10-day sailing round trip from Aqaba as an African cruise itinerary.

Onboard each sailing you have lectures, demonstrations and tastings as part of a Culture Curriculum. Azamara boasts more overnights in ports, longer stays and night time tours. We know the destinations you'll be visiting and what there is to see, do and experience. We offer you a variety of excursions to choose from, in every port you'll visit. From the moment you step onboard, you’ll receive Celebrity’s world-class service with activities to stimulate both the mind and body.

Of course many longer cruises that wind up in Africa begin in ports like Southampton in Europe or Singapore in Asia. Some lines (like Silversea and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises) offer an upgrade for a fly-in elephant safari in neighboring private reserves, too, where you can even ride the elephants or watch them swim. Set sail on Arabian Gulf cruises to explore exotic souks (Arabian markets), smell fragrant incense wafting from a traditional bakhoor burner and sample spicy dishes like machboos, a delicious seafood or meat stew.

Winter is one of the best times to visit the Arabian Gulf with a cruise, since it's still warm and dry here while it's cold and rainy in other parts of the world. Be prepared for a different kind of winter wonderland, as the rolling dunes of the desert stay warm and sunny year-round. The Arabian Gulf and North Africa mix heritage with modernity, so you're sure to find centuries-old forts and towers near sprawling cosmopolitan cityscapes. Whether you explore the area through a desert safari, shop 'til you drop in an enormous city mall or stroll the winding lanes of a traditional quarter, you'll find that in the Arabian Gulf, adventure is just around the corner. The top of many people’s lists when planning a cruise around Africa is going on a wildlife safari.

The Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, where most of these cruises navigate, is notorious for its sometimes treacherous seas. Anticipate rocky seas -- and some seasickness if you don't have the sturdiest of sea legs. You'll find safari-minded shore excursions in several South African ports, with a few alternatives out of Mombasa in Kenya. Regent Seven Seas Cruises has a Cape Town roundtrip, 15-night itinerary (in November 2016) with opportunities for safari stops in South Africa, as well as a call in Walvis Bay, Namibia. You can also head to La Petite France in Réunion to a small distillery creating essential oils and perfumes from local rose geranium.

Sample kibbeh, fritters of finely ground meat, bulgur wheat and spices served with quince paste or yogurt sauce. Hubs of ancient and modern art, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar are both home to incredible exhibits. Abu Dhabi Louvre is housed in an extraordinary building and encompasses the history of civilization, while the exceptional Museum of Islamic Art in Doha has one of the largest collections of Islamic art in the world. You won't have to look far for inviting sandy beaches with year-round warm, turquoise water.

Rio de Janeiro, one of the most visited cities in the southern hemisphere, has numerous activities for every desire. Cruise to Rio for the Carnival celebrations, natural environment, beautiful beaches and famous landmarks. Cruise to Port Louis in Mauritius for its natural beauty and stay to explore its fascinating past as a Dutch, French and British colony. The lush island of Madeira and its capital city of Funchal make for a beautiful excursion from the main land of Europe. Cruise to Funchal and spot the beautiful flowers and try the signature wine. Viking Rivers focuses their sailings on the culture of each cruises destination.

Alaska Cruises: Cruise to Alaska

all inclusive alaska cruise 2024

These cruises often stop in smaller ports such as Wrangell, Petersburg, or the native village of Kake, and moor in remote natural areas such as Misty Fjords or the remote shores of Baranof Island. You also get better and more personal in-depth programming from the onboard naturalists, expedition guides and cultural interpreters. In Alaska, count on many notable included excursions, like driving the uber-scenic Klondike Highway, feasting on freshly caught salmon at Liarsville Gold Rush Camp or visiting a sled dog camp (petting allowed). In Juneau, search for humpbacks and orcas on wildlife quests at sea or photograph the mighty Mendenhall Glacier from advantageous viewing points. One of the best luxury Alaska cruise ships is the 746-passenger all-suite Seven Seas Explorer.

Twice the glaciers

Note that this itinerary is longer than most (and Seabourn also offers weeklong sailings), delivering a far deeper immersion into the state's pristine and less-visited allures. For instance, visiting the Inland Islands, Endicott or Tracy Arm and Wrangell are unbeatable. The same goes for scenic cruising in Misty Fjords, with nearly incomparable beauty. Seven Seas Explorer is offering seven-night cruises, sailing between Vancouver and Seward from May through mid-September 2024. Fares for a July 17, 2024, "Summer on the Frontier" cruise start at $6,799 per person. All passengers regardless of their home country, citizenship or country of residency are responsible for obtaining the proper documentation for travel.

Oceania Cruises

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust, with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which docked in rustic Skagway last week. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line has nearly 100 more after that. Don’t just see the Great Land’s glaciers, feel them come alive on an Alaska cruisetour. Get up close to Mother Nature’s masterpieces and listen for the crash of “white thunder”. Visit wilderness playgrounds like Glacier Bay National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – along with even more natural wonderlands like Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord and Hubbard Glacier.

The number of passengers in 2022 has increased by more than 25 percent compared to 2019, the association reports. These Great Lakes cruise lines offer unparalleled sophistication and intimacy of small-ship cruising on the Great Lakes. Of the two lines operating in the Great Lakes, Viking has the greatest focus on outdoorsy stops such as Point Pelee (a tiny sandspit that juts into the northwestern corner of Lake Erie and is famous as a stopover for migratory birds). Some of Viking's sailings include a call at Alpena, Michigan — the gateway to a National Maritime Sanctuary, where passengers can kayak past shipwrecks in shallow waters.

"The hardware is good, the itinerary is good, the staffing is good. If you book with us, you're going to cruise. We're not going to cancel on you." Before the COVID-19 pandemic, international passengers were the most likely to cruise the Great Lakes; the French line Ponant and the German line Hapag-Lloyd offered different sailings that often sold out. On AQV, the stops beyond homeports include Michigan's quaint Mackinac Island, the locks of Sault St. Marie and Niagara Falls, as well as Detroit and Cleveland. Some longer itineraries offer passengers the opportunity to visit all five Great Lakes. According to Bierdz, Great Lakes cruises tick many of the boxes that people are looking for right now. That includes small, boutique cruises that are close to home and don't require lengthy overseas flights.

Touring the Great Lakes by ship is by far the easiest way to see a wide range of the area's attractions — from vibrant cities to natural wonders — in a single trip. The Great Lakes cruise season is a relatively short one, running from late May through mid-September.

Thunder Bay, Ontario

And on the Canadian side, highlights include First Nations cultural experiences, more wildlife and scenic landscapes, and the Georgian Bay Biosphere in Ontario, which UNESCO recognized as the world’s largest freshwater archipelago. Cruise itineraries include three or more of the lakes; some touch all five. On our unique Great Lakes tour boats, you will traverse great depths, watch the sun rise and set over distant horizons and learn compelling details about the region — both on- and offshore.

When do cruises go to the Great Lakes?

The iconic attraction on the island is the 135-year-old Grand Hotel, with its seemingly endless, rocker-lined front porch (the longest in the world). Afternoon tea in the hotel's parlor, or a game of croquet at its Tea Garden, are among Mackinac Island's allures. Tours in a horse-drawn carriage are another popular pastime; cars are banned on the island, leaving horse-drawn carriages as one of the main ways of getting around, along with bicycles. It's a retired Great Lakes freighter (named Valley Camp) that you can climb into and explore. In addition to touring the living quarters for its 29-person crew, you'll find a 20,000-square-foot maritime museum in its cargo hold with exhibits on the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and more. Known as "Canada's Gateway to the West" because it's the final navigational point on the Canadian side of Lake Superior, Thunder Bay is one of Ontario's most vibrant cities and a center for art and culture.

Great Lakes Cruises: Five Cruise Lines on the Five Great Lakes

In the end, the most important decisions are which ports you want to visit and for how long you wish to cruise the Great Lakes on a ship. There are seven-day cruises; two-week ones; those that call more ports in the US than Canada and vice versa; those that enter Lake Superior and those that only offer a quick transfer through Soo Locks. Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Inspiration offers 10- to 18-day cruises departing from Milwaukee and traveling to Halifax, Toronto or Detroit. Great Lakes cruises might all seem similar, but with an offer that ranges from Niagara Falls to historic, cultural and big-city ports, there’s plenty to choose from. Regardless of the route taken, chances are high that stops on these itineraries are places you've never thought of as being cruise ports -- and you'll be quite impressed with your findings. "We've had opportunity in the last two years to get them (the ships) prepped and ready for this itinerary," he said.

Motor City should probably be called Museum City, as it's home to a wonderful array of museums worth a visit, from The Detroit Museum of Art and the Motown Museum to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History. Settled by Germans in the 1840s, "Brew City," as it's known, also is a mecca of sorts for beer lovers — and not just because it's home to the original Miller Brewing Company complex, which is open daily for tours. You'll also find lots of craft breweries that you can visit on your own or as part of a tour, and you can tour (and drink at) the original Pabst Brewery. The best Great Lakes cruise ports include the handful of relatively big cities in the region, such as Chicago, that are loaded with cultural sites, nightspots and restaurants, as well as charming small towns such as Holland, Michigan.

The ship will only stay in the Great Lakes for a few months, however, before concentrating on coastal New England sailings. Trained as a psychologist, Irene is a regular contributor to Forbes.com where she writes about food, wine and travel. According to cruise travel influencer Cruise Mummy, Great Lakes Cruises cost at least $5,000 per person for a 7-10 night cruise or about $500 per person per night.

All of the above lines operate ships in the Great Lakes that carry fewer than 400 passengers. In general, the vessels are intimate and relatively high-end, with pricing to match. Some Great Lakes itineraries only include stops at relatively small towns such as Midland, Parry Sound and Little Current in Ontario; and Muskegon, Marquette and Houghton in Michigan. Others mix in calls at some of the bigger cities of the Great Lakes region, notably Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland and Toronto. On longer sailings, vessels often will overnight in such places as Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Thunder Bay. The diversity in Great Lakes itineraries extends to their start and end points.

Generally, the best time for cruising the Great Lakes is from July on, when the days are warmer and sunnier. Leaf-peepers may catch fall colors in late August or early September, especially in the most northern areas. However, don’t expect your standard all-inclusive, big-ship vacation with tons of restaurants, activities and kid-friendly amenities.

Accounting for 21% of all the world's fresh water, they truly are a marvel. Long distances between ports also mean cruising the Great Lakes at night. The long distances covered by cruises on the Great Lakes mean lots of time spent on board. If you bring your laptop or iPad, be prepared for long periods without connections. Cell phone service generally works well, but be aware of your location -- U.S. vs. Canada -- and roaming fees.

Great architecture and cultural institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago — along with lots of nightlife, shopping and world-class dining — make Chicago the premier city destination in the Great Lakes region. Many Great Lakes cruises begin or end in Chicago, with some including an overnight in the city, allowing time to explore. Don't miss a stroll down the Magnificent Mile and a sightseeing boat ride on the Chicago River (a great way to get an overview of the city and see some of its architectural gems). The Great Lakes cruise season is a short one, due mostly to the weather. With winters being cold and snowy in the region, cruise lines stick to the warmer months of May to September for Great Lakes sailings. The Great Lakes probably isn't the first place that comes to mind when you think of cruising.

Carnival Cruise Line guide: Everything to know about ships, itineraries and more

The Destiny-class platform continued to be used in various iterations all the way to the Carnival Splendor in 2008. The same year the veteran ship Festivale, the last of the original second-hand fleet, was retired. Carnival Celebration has gone from the drawing board to the seas! Explore this a map of the ship, and start fueling your vacation dreams. Carnival Celebration® has its own Punchliner Comedy Club in the Celebration Central zone, and up on stage you’ll find some real pros who know how to wedge a little laughter into anyone’s evening.

Who goes on Carnival cruise ships?

Across Firenze, you’ll see touches of Italy; think cute cafe set-ups that look like they were picked up from a Florence sidewalk. Terrazza staterooms access a private sun deck with whirlpools and a bar. Carnival’s fan-favorite dining options and amenities, like Guy’s Burger Joint and WaterWorks, will be on board. Most onboard activities such as shows and deck-top attractions are included in the fare. For the most part, Carnival ships don't have quite as many features on board as Royal Caribbean or Norwegian vessels, in part because they're not as big. They're still packed with a variety of attractions, including multiple entertainment venues, casinos, spas and lots of deck-top fun zones such as water parks and ropes courses.

Meet Carnival Celebration®

I also had a wonderful time at two special events — complimentary afternoon tea and an extra-fee Dr. Seuss-themed Thing 1 and Thing 2 Birthday Breakfast — held in the Atlantic Restaurant. On my sailing, I stayed in a balcony cabin, which was elegantly decorated in neutrals with blue accents. I appreciated touches like ample vanity mirror lighting, adjustable shelving in the closets and a surplus of USB outlets throughout the room, including near the vanity and beside the bed. Plus, the space is a bit of a throwback to the days when interior designer and architect Joe Farcus was responsible for Carnival's ship decor.

In 2001, Carnival transferred their first new build, the 1982 built Tropicale to Costa Cruises. Through the rest of the decade, the line would continue to sell, or transfer the other 1980s built ships to other lines, with the Jubilee in 2004, Celebration in 2008, and Holiday in 2009. In 2001, the new Panamax size Spirit class debuted with the Carnival Spirit, the first of the four-ship class within the Carnival fleet. Carnival Celebration had people talking before they even got their first look. Even during construction, we knew where we were heading with the big plans for Carnival Jubilee! So here’s your deck-by-deck look at where to find all the fun, and all the staterooms.

Former fleet

All types of smoking are forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies. A few other forms of identification, such as a passport card, also are acceptable. At the time of publication, prices started from $709 per person ($101 per person per night) for an inside cabin or $919 per person ($131 per person per night) for balcony accommodations. Go one deck farther, and you can choose between the Havana Bar, which serves Latin-themed cocktails, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge, which has a special menu of drinks dedicated to military members. Back inside, Deck 6's Piano Bar is where passengers can order a tipple while an onboard pianist tickles the ivories. Make your way up a deck, and you'll find the Limelight Lounge, which serves as a secondary performance space and trivia outpost.

Then it serves up international dishes… all with Emeril’s signature culinary flair! From one day to the next you’ll find new stuff on the menu — so make sure to come back and see what surprising specialties are ready to delight you for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Rudi’s Seagrill™ is the brainchild of cookbook author and master chef Rudi Sodamin.

But you could easily forget, because when you're at Serenity you could not be further from it all. The world you'll find yourself in is one of complete peace, sea breezes and, of course, a nearby bar. It's the place to get done the kind of stuff you just can't seem to do anywhere else — reconnect with your partner, finish that book, or do absolutely, blissfully, nothing at all.

THINKING ABOUT THE CARIBBEAN?

Initially built in 2019 for Costa Cruises, this ship joined the Carnival fleet in 2023. Carnival Venezia is ideal if you’re looking for a ship that celebrates one of Italy’s most iconic cities. Venice is the inspiration behind the indoor and outdoor areas, including the atrium, modeled after Piazza San Marco, and the Carnevale Lounge, inspired by Venetian masquerades. Don't miss the Venetian Toast, where the ship’s captain greets guests and crew don Venetian masks.

However, it offers new ocean- and beach-themed zones, delicious food, creative cocktails, friendly crew members, comfy cabins, outdoor thrills, Texas charm and a marquee packed with fun daily diversions and nighttime shows. You'll find it's an affordable Caribbean vacation that speaks to just about any traveler who enjoys a large-cruise-ship experience. Within those categories, Carnival Jubilee offers three types of special cabins.

Carnival Jubilee is the newest Excel-class ship in the fleet, sailing from Galveston, Texas. Adults also have their own space at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat with swaying hammocks and a bar. Carnival has been rolling out faster Wi-Fi systems across its fleet in the last couple of years, such that you can now stream video on some ships.

At 800 feet in length, these aren't the biggest roller coasters ever. However, they're real ones — the first ever on a cruise ship. The top decks of Carnival vessels are covered in family-focused attractions – pools, waterslide areas and bustling fun zones with such draws as ropes courses and miniature golf. BlueIguana is a Chipotle-style restaurant, with yummy made-to-order burritos and tacos.

Carnival Luminosa (formerly the Costa Luminosa) is for you if you want to sail to destinations like Alaska and Australia. It also offers occasional itineraries through scenic transpacific spots like Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, and Japan. The ship has all of the brand’s classic amenities, like the RedFrog Rum Bar and Punchliner Comedy Club, plus an array of dining options, including sushi, pizza, ice cream, and an over-the-top brunch.

That’s a line-up of classic ports in this part of the country that shouldn’t be missed. The round trip cruise has stops in Mahogany Bay (Carnival’s private port in Roatan), Costa Maya, and Cozumel before returning home. There’s a lot to do on this ship, so being able to sail for a week will give you time to get it all done. But with Carnival, there are still opportunities to sail with a great deal. In this case, Carnival Jubilee (which debuts in late 2023) will sail from Galveston on September 7, 2024 on a 7-day cruise.

If you're wondering where the pool and whirlpool are, we're so alike, you and us... And that's why we're sure you're gonna love The Watering Hole, a poolside bar we're building for aficionados of backyard-style relaxation. And for military folks — or folks who just want to raise a glass to them — please report to Heroes Tribute™ Lounge for great service. We know you guys like soft serve too, so we're throwing in a Swirls™ location — one of two! At Summer Landing, fun this cool is literally always in season.

First is Family Harbor, which offers nautically themed cabins that sleep up to five people and rooms that can be connected via an interior door. Families booked in Family Harbor cabins have access to a dedicated Family Harbor Lounge, which offers daily breakfast, snacks and drinks, as well as board games and TVs with a selection of movies and video games. They also receive a free night of babysitting in the kids club so parents can enjoy some alone time. Go ahead and call Summer Landing 'the greatest chill spot at sea'... What's three letters long and goes great with chilling outdoors? BBQ, so we're building a Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse into this zone so it always tastes like summer here with freshly-smoked faves designed by Guy Fieri and original Parched Pig® beers brewed just feet away.
